An Anarchist book festival turns violent

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Feminist author Lierre Keith is recovering after having a cayenne pepper-laced pie thrown in her face during the 15th annual Anarchist Book Festival at Golden Gate Park over the weekend. Keith had come to the festival from her home in Massachusetts to speak about her latest book, "The Vegetarian Myth." Three people approached the dais during her lecture and one of them crammed the pie in her face. There were no arrests. The perpetrators were vegans upset with her book and message, fitness blogger Richard Nikoley and others say.

Add Keith: Health advocate Jimmy Moore has a post-assault comment from the author:
My eyes are still puffy and blurry, but the pain is definitely better. I think the worst part was hearing people cheer my assailants while I was being assaulted. I don't want to live in a world where people cheer while someone has cayenne rubbed into their eyes. They are vile, vicious people.
Add the book: One of the promo blurbs is from Pulitzer Prize winning author Alice Walker, who calls it "a wonderful book, full of thoughtful, soulful teachings, and appropriate rage."
