Sad times for a fallen movie palace

Hard to believe the Alexandria Theater at 18th and Geary, so named for its Egyptian-style decor when it was built in 1923, was once considered among the city's finest movie houses. It's been an on-going blight since it closed in 2004, a year ahead of the Coronet down the street. The Alexandria's foreign owners and the city Planning Department remain at loggerheads over plans to redevelop the property. And folks in the Richmond are frustrated, as some of them tell the Examiner's Mike Aldax: "There are a lot of homeless people sleeping there," said Yevgeniya Lapa, an employee of the Europa Plus market across the street. "They use it like a restroom. It's dirty."

Elsewhere on the frustration front: Some Fisherman's Wharf residents are trying to get the city to close the troubled club Suede. Chronicle
