Author Maran on the sex abuse that wasn’t

Monday, September 20, 2010

image Frances Dinkelspiel at Berkeleyside scores an early Q&A with Bay Area feminist author Meredith Maran whose new book My Lie: A True Story of False Memory lays bare how she falsely accused her father of sexually abusing her. Safe to say, the book is likely to stir new debate about the “recovered memory movement.” An excerpt:

It actually felt–not good, exactly, but satisfying to explore this piece of my worst behavior, to come forward and say, I did this terrible thing and I’m doing my best now to understand why and to make amends where that’s possible. I’m a great believer in “be the change you want to see,” and admitting a wrong is a good place to start.

Add Maran: She’s booked for the 10 o’clock segment of KQED’s Forum with Michael Krasny tomorrow morning, and guests at Berkeley Arts & Letters tomorrow night.
