The Chronicle is calling Greg Suhr’s promotion to police chief perhaps Mayor Ed Lee’s most politically astute move to date. That would be giving SFPD’s rank-and-file the chief they wanted in exchange for, maybe, willingness from the cops to pay more into their pensions.
Add Suhr: Police union boss Gary Delagnes adds currency to the idea, as John Cote writes this morning:
Gary Delagnes, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, told some officers at Suhr's swearing-in ceremony that they had essentially "bought" the chief's appointment.
Delagnes, who is known for his blunt delivery, on Thursday acknowledged making the statement, but said he meant that Suhr was the only person with the respect among officers to be able to get further budget concessions.
