In Berkeley, Larry Blake’s gives way to ‘Pappy’s’

Monday, May 16, 2011

image Larry Blake’s, the iconic Berkeley restaurant and live music venue that shut down in March after 71 years on Telegraph Avenue, is being replaced by a sports bar that expects to open in August. The old Blake's, mezzanine and all, has already been gutted.

Add bar: The new place is to be called Pappy’s Grill & Sports Bar, the Daily Cal says. For Cal fans of a certain generation that’ll undoubtedly evoke football coach Lynn “Pappy” Waldorf (that’s his statue on campus), who coached at Berkeley from ‘46 to ‘57 and, until Jeff Tedford came along, was Cal’s all-time win leader.
