Jonestown memorial can go ahead in Oakland hills

Thursday, May 26, 2011

image A judge in Oakland this afternoon cleared the way for the planned formal unveiling Sunday of a Jonestown memorial at Evergreen Cemetery that has 918 names on it—including that of the Rev. Jim Jones.

Add: The Oakland Tribune’s Angela Woodall says that Judge Robert McGuiness rejected the argument by a group of Jonestown survivors’ relatives led by Jynona Norwood (pictured) that the cemetery broke a contract with her Guyana Tribute Foundation to install a monument minus the cult leader’s name. The judge said it isn’t clear if a contract ever existed, and if it did, the Norwood group has had more than a decade without producing anything.

Noted: The monument to be unveiled Sunday has the backing of Jim Jones Jr., son of the late People’s Temple leader.
