Kevin J. Mullen, SFPD cop turned author was 75

images The former SFPD deputy chief who wrote five books about San Francisco and criminal justice after retiring from the force in 1986, died April 18 at his home in Novato. He had a long battle with cancer. One of his books, “The Toughest Gang in Town: Police Stories from Old San Francisco,” won an American Book Award in 2006. Obituary: Chronicle.
