SFJazz Center: music to jazz lovers’ ears

Saturday, May 7, 2011

image Prediction: Of the two big San Francisco groundbreakings this week—the other being at the Metreon—the one that will enhance civic and cultural life the most, by far, is one you may have heard less about: the new SFJazz Center. It’s to be the permanent home for the eponymous (and nomadic) premier West Coast jazz-presenting organization.

Add SFJazz: The new $50 million, 35,000 square foot structure, to rise at Fell and Franklin just a block from Davies Symphony Hall on the site of an old auto repair shop, will also become the nation’s first stand-alone facility built specifically for jazz. Jesse Hamlin writes about it for the Chronicle. There’s more at NPR’s jazz blog.
