Chronicle left out of press pool for First Lady’s visit

Monday, June 13, 2011

imageNo one from the Chronicle will be among the pool reporters tomorrow covering First Lady Michelle Obama’s visit to the Bay Area. Instead, the White House has designated two reporters from the Oakland Tribune.

Add: Although the White House isn’t about to say so, it looks like punishment for the caper last month in which the Chron’s Carla Marinucci used her cell phone to capture video of President Obama being serenaded by protesters during a St. Regis Hotel breakfast fundraiser. The White House press office called it a no-no, even though half the non-journalists in the room also had their video phones out.

Officially speaking: The Chron’s Joe Garofoli asked the White House about the exclusion and here’s the official line:

"No reporter, including Carla Marinucci, has been banned from covering future presidential events and the White House of course would have no problem including any reporter who agrees to follow the rules in pool-only events.”
