Editorial not so ‘Fresh & Easy’ on Fiona Ma bill

Wednesday, June 22, 2011

imageA Bay Area News Group editorial lays into that bill being carried by Assemblywoman Fiona Ma (and backed by the United Food and Commercial Workers Union) to outlaw buying alcohol at self-service checkout stands in grocery stores, calling it “silly,” among other things.

More Ma: Although Ma frames it as a way to cut down on underage drinking, the BANG editorial board cites a state Senate analysis suggesting the bill is a solution in search of a problem. It’s widely seen as aimed at rapidly-expanding grocer Fresh & Easy, which organized labor is up-in-arms about because the chain relies on self-serve scanners.

Scan this: The Chron’s Andrew S. Ross says Mayor Ed Lee had been scheduled to attend a ribbon-cutting for Fresh & Easy’s store in the Outer Richmond today, but apparently decided to cancel.
