Former governor George Deukmejian has moved his papers—all 2,863 boxes of them—from Stanford’s Hoover Institution to Cal State Long Beach, in his hometown. The reason: Apparently few scholars were using them at Stanford, says the LA Times today, Deukmejian’s 83rd birthday.
Add: Deukmejian was the last governor with a choice in the matter. A 1988 law requires gubernatorial papers to go to the state archives in Sacramento. That’s the same controversial law that—unlike any other in the nation—allows governors or their representatives to restrict access to their papers for up to 50 years.
