In Vallejo, film tries not to rile Scientologists

Wednesday, June 8, 2011

image A flack for the Phillip Seymour Hoffman-starring film shooting in Vallejo through the end of the month is telling the local paper that the untitled movie isn’t about the late Church of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard (pictured), as is widely suspected. “It’s a World War II drama. It’s about a drifter after the war,” Joanne Sellar of Western Film Co. tells the Vallejo Times-Herald.

Add: The trades and others suggest otherwise, saying the film directed by Oscar winner Paul Thomas Anderson and also starring Amy Adams and Joaquin Phoenix is based on Hubbard’s life. Hubbard served in the Navy during WWII before founding Scientology in the early ‘50s. Oh, and the Vallejo location scenes are being shot on a “closed set.”
