Dramatic moments in a Placerville courtroom this morning as Phillip and Nancy Garrido were sent to prison likely for the rest of their lives. The Chronicle’s Demian Bulwa, who was there, says Phillip Garrido sat silently as Jaycee Dugard’s mother read a statement from the kidnapping and 18-year sexual enslavement victim that included this: "I chose not to be here today because I refuse to waste another second of my life in your presence."
Add sentencing: Judge Douglas Phimster, after telling Phillip Garrido “You lack a soul,” sentenced him to 431 years to life. Nancy Garrido got 36 years to life. Bulwa says she wept at times as her lawyer read a statement from her, asking Dugard for forgiveness:
"Being sorry is not enough. Words cannot express the remorse for what I did. I have no excuse. I am guilty as charged."
