Jean Harris, LGBT political icon, dies

Tuesday, June 28, 2011

An icon of the LGBT movement, the retired politico who served as a top aide to former Mayor Frank Jordan, died Sunday in Palm Springs. Her death was disclosed in an email from Palm Springs City Councilwoman Ginny Foat posted at the LGBT/POV website.

A fixture in LGBT politics for three decades, Harris played an instrumental role in the so-called “lavender sweep” that propelled LGBT candidates Roberta Achtenberg, Carole Migden, Harry Britt and Tom Ammiano into office in San Francisco during the early ‘90s. In recent years, she’d worked for California Assembly Speaker Emeritus Herb Wesson and former Speaker Fabian Nunez and worked closely with the LGBT caucus as a consultant to former state Senate leader Don Perata.
