Report: Lynn Woolsey to announce retirement

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

imageThe Santa Rosa Press-Democrat quotes sources close to the Petaluma Democrat as saying she’ll announce next Monday that she’s retiring from Congress at the end of her 10th term. Speculation has swirled for several weeks about the popular 73-year-old congresswoman’s plans.  It heightened yesterday with her statement that she would be joined by Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) along with family and friends for an unspecified announcement about her plans.

Add Woolsey: There’s likely no shortage of competitors for her seat. Assemblyman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) and Marin County political activist Norman Solomon have formed campaign organizations with the intent of running if Woolsey retires, the Press-Democrat says. And then there’s the latest political newcomer to the district: Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, who, coincidentally or not, just moved to Marin County.

Noted: Woolsey has been none too happy that her Sonoma-Marin County district is proposed to be redrawn to stretch from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Oregon Coast—but excluding Santa Rosa.
