Look for outcries soon now that the San Mateo County Community College District’s board has said

it will put
KCSM, its venerable public television station, on the sales block. The Mercury News quotes college officials as saying the station could fetch $5 million. Whoever ends up bidding on it, it isn’t apt to be a happy scene among those who see the station, founded in 1964, as a rich part of the college district’s legacy.
Add: The station has been a money drain for years, but things were looking better. It had cut its losses from $1.5 million to $800,000 in the last fiscal year. But in an era of tight budgets, the district says it can no longer justify the expense.
Noted: Not on the chopping block, KCSM 91.1 FM, which is in the black (barely). That’s welcome news for fans of the radio station’s 24-hour jazz format.
