Edward Hastings, ACT co-founder was 80

imageThe co-founder and former artistic director who was widely credited with saving the American Conservatory Theater when the flagship San Francisco theater institution was reeling financially in the 1980s, died Tuesday in New Mexico of complications from Lewy body dementia.

Add: Hastings built a stellar reputation for his staging of contemporary and classic plays as a director at ACT under founding artistic director William Ball before taking over as artistic director from 1986 to 1992. He helped create the Asian American Theater Workshop within ACT that later became the Asian American Theater Company. Obituary: Chronicle.
