Journalists at The Bay Citizen, the non-profit
online news site spawned with $5 million in seed money from financier Warren Hellman, have voted to unionize, the Pacific Media Workers Guild announced this morning. The vote was 7 to 5, and although two other ballots are being challenged, a guild press release says the union is “certain” that the unionization effort—the first at a startup news website—will stand regardless of whether they are included.
