With owner’s exit, Balboa Theatre’s future doubtful

Thursday, July 21, 2011

imageBalboa Theatre owner Gary Meyer tells the Chronicle he’s moving on after this summer, leaving the independent Richmond District movie house up for grabs. The issue: a $200,000 digital conversion upgrade that will be needed within a couple of years when film prints of movies may no longer be available.

Add: The former co-founder of the Landmark Theatre chain who took over the Balboa lease in 2001 doesn’t sound optimistic that someone will step in: “I made the decision that in mid-August I will be giving up the theater. My hope is that the theater will survive.”
