Balboa Theatre owner Gary Meyer tells the Chronicle he’s moving on after this summer, leaving the independent Richmond District movie house up for grabs. The issue: a $200,000 digital conversion upgrade that will be needed within a couple of years when film prints of movies may no longer be available.
Add: The former co-founder of the Landmark Theatre chain who took over the Balboa lease in 2001 doesn’t sound optimistic that someone will step in: “I made the decision that in mid-August I will be giving up the theater. My hope is that the theater will survive.”
