This could be embarrassing. And we’re not talking about Cal’s cupcake game against tiny Presbyterian College. Rather, the Golden Bear faithful aren’t ponying up to buy tickets to the Sept. 3 season opener against Fresno State at AT&T Park. So far, Cal’s ticket office has sold only 7,500 tickets compared to Fresno State’s 12,000, the Oakland Trib’s Jonathan Okanes says.
Worse, still: Under terms of the two schools’ agreement with promoters underwriting the so-called “neutral site” game, Cal must sell tickets equaling $657,000 in revenue in order to qualify for its guarantee of $1,050,000 for the game. It’s still $175,000 short. Fresno State, on the other hand, easily sold enough tickets to get its $900,000 guarantee.
