At Berkeley High, they’ve decided finally to report robberies to police

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

Kudos to Ginny Roemer, the mom and former San Francisco assistant district attorney whose imagetenacity helped force Berkeley High School officials to start reporting all campus robberies to police. That’s right, they weren’t doing it. After Roemer’s son was robbed of his iPod in front of a surveillance camera, a school official essentially brushed Roemer off, saying her son wasn’t in danger, end of story. It was only after the son later pointed out the suspect to a police officer on campus that anything was done and the policy got changed, the Berkeley Voice says:

Berkeley Police spokeswoman Sgt. Mary Kusmiss declined to comment specifically about how the department persuaded the district to start reporting.

Noted: The high school has had its share of crime problems, including a rash of incidents involving guns on campus.
