That’s Sammy the Slug, the UC Santa Cruz mascot, who’s getting lots of extra attention on campus this week. It’s the 25th anniversary of the Banana Slugs as the school’s official nickname for athletics. Tuesday was Banana Slug Day.Add: After UCSC began playing Division III sports in 1980, the administration chose Sea Lions for a nickname. But students didn’t go for it and the university relented. Former student and Banana Slug logo co-creator Marc Ratner tells the Santa Cruz Sentinel that if it had turned out any differently, “I would have been bummed.”
