Three decades after crazed ex-Supervisor Dan White gunned down then Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk at City Hall, some of the late mayor’s friends and colleagues are raising money for a full-length documentary about him. There’s a reception next Tuesday downtown to benefit the George R. Moscone Documentary Film Project; the Chronicle’s Willie Brown will host.
Add: Although Milk’s life has been thoroughly explored, including by Hollywood, Moscone has remained a somewhat neglected figure, which is something the project hopes to change. Calbuzz, which recaps his legacy in a blog post today, has a nice quote from former Moscone speechwriter Josh Getlin of the LA Times editorial page from 2008 that’s as timely now:
Thirty years later, Moscone remains an enigma to all but a handful of us who knew him. But this year, and every year, we mourn the loss of our friend who did so much to shape the modern face of San Francisco. And we continue to hope that history will one day give him his proper due.
