Coit Tower’s tattered Great Depression murals

Friday, October 21, 2011

imageAbout 150,000 people a year pour into Coit Tower and view the landmark WPA murals from the Great Depression and, if you haven’t been in there in a while, the frescoes are starting to look ragged. It’s been 1990 since they were renovated. Now the Recreation and Park Department says it will earmark 1 percent of revenue from a new vendor for the landmark’s elevator, food and beverage sales, and gift shop toward future restoration, the Chronicle says.

Add: The current vendor, Fashion House Inc., earned nearly $1 million in revenue last fiscal year.
