After lots of angry feedback from Oakland residents, it looks like Bay Area News Group may not torch the 137-year-old Oakland Tribune brand, after all. The Tribune was supposed to vanish Nov. 2 and become—along with several smaller BANG papers—the East Bay Tribune. But the Chronicle’s David R. Baker quotes BANG president Mac Tully as saying they’re rethinking aspects of the consolidation plan, at least with respect to getting rid of the Oakland Tribune name. Parent MediaNews Group’s new CEO John Paton, who replaced Dean Singleton, asked for a second look, he says.
Noted: No word on whether the company may also step away from abandoning the Contra Costa Times as a brand. As of now, it’s slated to be rebranded as “The Times,” come Nov. 2.
