A just-revealed state Department of Justice report from 2009 paints a Keystone Cops image of Oakland police Sgt. Derwin Longmire, the lead investigator in the murder of journalist Chauncey Bailey, for his handling of matters related to the defunct Your Black Muslim Bakery criminal enterprise. Among other things, it cites a former high-ranking commander as saying Longmire’s work was so shoddy he should have never been a detective in the first place.
