Carlota Gutierrez, the one-time Miss Sacramento who turned from a career in television news to become a media consultant to a slew of state politicians over the years—Willie Brown and L. A. mayor Antonio Villaraigosa among them—has died of ALS, sometimes called Lou Gehrig’s disease. She was 54. As a sports reporter for Univision, she did a stint based in San Francisco in the 1980s before moving to Sacramento and ultimately doing media consulting for the state Legislature and numerous state pols.
