Former Giants and A’s great Matty Alou was 72

Thursday, November 3, 2011

imageThe former outfielder and lifetime .307 hitter who won a National League batting title in 1966 and a World Series ring with the A’s in 1972, has died in Miami. His nephew tells ESPN that Matty (on the left in this 1962 photo with brother Felipe) had a pacemaker inserted three weeks ago.

Add: Alou played 15 seasons in the big leagues for six different teams as part of a trio of famous Alou brothers, including Felipe and Jesus. Together they helped open the doors for other major leaguers from their native Dominican Republic. The brothers made history Sept. 15, 1963, playing at the same time in the outfield for the Giants in a game against Pittsburgh at Forbes Field.
