‘Lana Peters,’ Josef Stalin’s daughter: the Marin connection

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

imagePaul Liberatore at the Marin IJ notes the passing of Josef Stalin’s daughter Svetlana Alliluyeva, aka Lana Peters, in Wisconsin a couple of weeks ago at age 85 and the famous Soviet defector’s connection to Marin County. After her 1973 separation from Wes Peters, then vice president of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, a pregnant Svetlana moved to Mill Valley to live with Peters’ sister and her hubby: Margedant and (former U. S. Senator) S. I. Hayakawa. An excerpt:

"She and Wes had separated during her pregnancy and my folks offered her a place to stay," recalled the Hayakawas' son, Alan, a retired journalist now living in Pennsylvania. "She was gracious and welcomed having a place to stay."

Noted: Her daughter, Olga, was born at Marin General Hospital. She lives in Oregon and goes by another name.
