Oakland cops to Mayor Quan: ‘We’re confused’

Tuesday, November 1, 2011

imageMore festering embarrassment for Mayor Jean Quan with the Oakland police union’s releasing a statement expressing confusion over what’s expected of the cops during tomorrow’s general strike called by Occupy Oakland. As everyone knows, the cops were ordered to clear out the protesters’ encampment at Frank Ogawa Plaza Oct. 25. That didn’t go well. On the eve of tomorrow’s big day, the camp is about the same size it was, pre-raid. An excerpt from the police union statement:

"We, too, are the 99 percent fighting for better working conditions, fair treatment and the ability to provide a living for our children and families. We are severely understaffed with many city beats remaining unprotected by police during the day and evening hours. As your police officers, we are confused."

Add: Sgt. Dom Arotzarena, the union’s president, tells the Chronicle “there is no clear mission here.”
