Bakersfield congressman Kevin McCarthy, the No. 3-ranking House Republican, suggests that fellow congressman David Dreier—who has his own reelection challenge—would make a formidable opponent to Sen. Dianne Feinstein this November. So far, Feinstein has only one announced challenger, Elizabeth Emken, a Danville non-profit executive and relative unknown whose political chops include a fourth-place GOP primary finish in a run for Congress two years ago. But McCarthy insists to Capitol Alert that she’s got a shot, too:
"Abraham Lincoln lost a race for the Senate, served one term in the House, became president. Barack Obama was a state senator, ran, wasn't favored. He actually lost his race for Congress in the primary by 30 percentage points. There's opportunity."
