Mary Hayashi comments on shoplifting plea

Monday, January 9, 2012

imageAssemblywoman Mary Hayashi (D-Castro Valley) is commenting for the first time since her no contest plea to misdemeanor grand theft—reduced from a felony by San Francisco superior court judge Gerardo Sandoval—stemming from her Neiman Marcus shoplifting caper. No mention of the “brain tumor” excuse offered by her lawyer outside court last week. Instead, she says the shoplifting was “unintentional.”

Add: Capitol Alert has the written statement. Hayashi isn’t giving interviews. Imagine that. An excerpt:
"The simple fact is I unintentionally walked out of a store with items I had not paid for. Of course, I intended to purchase what I had, but I didn't. Losing track of how fast you are driving is no excuse for speeding. And losing track of clothing I was purchasing is no excuse for walking out of a store without paying."
