Mirkarimi sworn in under cloud of abuse allegation

Sunday, January 8, 2012

imageRoss Mirkarimi’s swearing-in as sheriff today—with wife Eliana Lopez clinging to his side—has given San Francisco a freeze-frame image for posterity, with the interpretation to be determined. The new sheriff and former supe is being investigated for alleged spousal abuse. Lopez, the former Venezuelan telenovela star, says it never happened. A neighbor says Lopez told her it did and has turned over alleged digital photos of a bruised Lopez, along with text messages, as evidence. Jurisprudence awaits.

Add: The Chronicle reports a packed house at the Civic Center ceremony, but there was one notable program change: Superior Court Judge Katherine Feinstein recused herself from administering the oath of office. Ex-mayor Art Agnos did it.
