Saint Francis, St. Mary’s hospitals drop church affiliation*

Monday, January 23, 2012

Catholic Healthcare West, which operates Saint Francis Memorial Hospital and St. Mary’s Medical Center in San Francisco, is ending its affiliation with the Roman Catholic Church. The reason, says Kaiser Health News: the competitive need to offer birth control services, including abortions, not permitted by the church. The group’s new name will be Dignity Health.

Add: The group’s Northern California hospitals also includes Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City.

[+] Did somebody goof? The original story from Kaiser Health News posted at the Bay Area News Group website has been scrubbed (without explanation so far) of any mention of abortion policy as a reason for the hospital group's dropping its church affiliation. The move is now being described purely in business terms.
