School shells out over counselor it refused to fire for sexual harassment

Friday, January 13, 2012

imageBerkeley school district refused to get rid of guidance counselor Anthony Smith after he was accused of sexually harassing a 16-year-old female student at Berkeley High School, even after concluding that his conduct was “inappropriate and unprofessional.” Last night the school board approved a $57,500 payout to settle the student’s sexual harassment lawsuit, Berkeleyside says.

Window dressing: Among other things, the district pledged to update the Student Handbook to make it easier for kids to know where to complain about sexual harassment. To a guidance counselor, maybe?
