In West Oakland, families with kids look elsewhere

Monday, February 13, 2012

Interesting Sunday piece by the Oakland Tribune’s Katy Murphy about the changing imagedemographics of West Oakland, where the huge exodus of families with children continues. Census data show a 31 percent drop in school-age kids there in 10 years, and a decided gain in population of non-Hispanic whites and Asians as more and more African Americans leave.

Add: Just how dramatic is the change? McClymonds High (whose famous alums include rapper MC Hammer and sports greats Bill Russell and Frank Robinson) is down to about 250 students. Murphy says despite receiving $224,000 in extra funding last fall, it still couldn’t afford a secretary, guidance counselor or assistant principal.
