Nadia Lockyer enters treatment for substance abuse

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

imageLess than two weeks after she was allegedly assaulted after going to a Newark motel to meet with an ex-boyfriend, Alameda County Supervisor Nadia Lockyer has entered treatment for substance abuse. In a statement, the wife of state Treasurer Bill Lockyer says she has entered a “wellness and recovery center” for an unspecified chemical dependency and to recover from her injuries “from the assault.” No word on how long she expects the treatment to take, but she apparently doesn’t intend to resign from office, saying she will continue “doing the work I was elected to do.”

Add: Rumors have swirled around the 40-year-old Lockyer since news of the motel incident surfaced when Bill Lockyer confirmed it for the Chronicle’s Matier & Ross column Sunday. Bill Lockyer’s account is that his wife went to the motel on Newark Boulevard to help the former boyfriend who was in distress. However, Newark police have said little about the case, and have not identified the man accused of assaulting Nadia Lockyer. The matter is said to have been turned over to Alameda County district attorney Nancy O’Malley for review.

Noted: Bill Lockyer alluded to the ex-boyfriend as having a law enforcement history, which has further fueled speculation as to whether drugs were involved in the incident. Nadia Lockyer’s statement makes only passing reference to the motel incident, saying that the Chronicle column was “generally true.” However, a piece for the Bay Area News Group newspapers today elaborates. An excerpt:

Bill Lockyer's spokesman on Monday said the Chronicle erred in reporting that the motel room was the ex-boyfriend's, when in fact Nadia Lockyer had rented the motel room after an argument with her husband. Beyond that, spokesman Tom Dresslar said, Lockyer won't comment further and is concerned only with protecting his wife and their 8-year-old son.

Nadia Lockyer's alleged ex-boyfriend, a 35-year-old San Jose man, didn't return phone calls and e-mails Monday and Tuesday. His father said he wouldn't comment until his son has spoken to a lawyer.
