A Chronicle editorial today poses the question that’s been top of mind since last week’s revelation that Alameda County Supervisor Nadia Lockyer’s current stint in drug rehab is (at least?) her second. The first being 2010, the year she was elected with help from a boat load of almost $2 million from hubby and state Treasurer Bill Lockyer’s campaign war chest. An excerpt:
Political novice Nadia Lockyer would have been no match for Liz Figueroa, a 12-year state legislator, without an infusion of her husband's campaign cash that gave her a war chest more akin to a congressional race than a countywide contest.
Bill Lockyer's stature as a statewide officeholder - and lack of re-election opposition - put him in a position to provide his wife with resources that would be otherwise unimaginable for a candidate with her thin political portfolio.
As a veteran politician, Bill was in a position to know that the stresses of public office would be very difficult on someone coming out of a rehab program.
Add: The Chron’s editorial board called up Bill Lockyer to talk about the timing and circumstances of Nadia’s 2010 rehab. He declined to talk about it.
