State GOP gathers in Burlingame amid disarray

Friday, February 24, 2012

imageSteve Harmon, who covers state government and politics for the Mercury News and its affiliated newspapers, sums up the plight of the California GOP as it prepares for its spring convention in Burlingame this weekend:
The Republicans' registration numbers are down to an all-time low: 30.4 percent. They're almost broke. And Gov. Jerry Brown began the year announcing he would pursue a tax-hike initiative and dismissed Republicans as politically irrelevant, after pursuing them like a desperate suitor in 2010.
Add: Mitt Romney holds a 31 to 25 percent advantage over Rick Santorum among Republicans statewide in the latest Field Poll, although Santorum has surged lately.
