Editor lies about colleague’s death, is fired

Friday, March 16, 2012

imageAs editorial page editor of The Oregonian, Bob Caldwell, 63, helped the newspaper win a Pulitzer Prize a few years ago. He died of a heart attack Saturday—in the apartment of a 23-year-old woman whom he apparently was helping financially in exchange for sex. Now the newspaper has fired Kathleen Glanville, the veteran editor in charge of its breaking news team, for lying about the circumstances of Caldwell’s death to lessen the embarrassment to Caldwell’s widow, a close friend.

Add: Jim Romenesko has Glanville’s farewell message.
