Adrienne Rich and her husband had three sons before she left him in 1970. Six years later, she used her married-life experiences to write “Of Woman Born,” her feminist critique of pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood. The feminist poet would go on to publish more than a dozen volumes of verse and five collections of nonfiction, exploring women’s rights, racism, sexuality, economic justice and lesbianism, as well as to teach at a half dozen universities, including San Jose State and Stanford. Rich died Tuesday at her home in Santa Cruz from complications from rheumatoid arthritis, her son, Pablo Conrad, tells the Associated Press. She was 82. Obit: AP
