Mayor Lee: Is there a real estate deal he doesn’t announce?

Thursday, March 8, 2012

imageJ. K. Dineen over at San Francisco Business Times says he used to worry about being scooped on real estate stories by the Chronicle, the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and more recently, blog sites like Socketsite. No more. Now, he’s getting scooped by Mayor Ed Lee:

For those of you who have not noticed, Mayor Lee is a machine when it comes to announcing business news in San Francisco. He is like the Associated Press and PR Newswire rolled into one. Riverbed signs a lease at 680 Folsom St.? Mayor Lee wants to break the news. Macys.com is taking 250,000 square feet? Mayor Lee is on the story. Autodesk is expanding at One Market St.? Mayor Lee is there with the TV cameras. ZenDesk? Pac-12 Studios? Salesforce? Mayor Lee and his economic development team are all over it.

Just today, the mayor beat me on the news that One Kings Lane was moving and expanding to the Twitter headquarters building at 1355 Market St.

Add: His conclusion: “So if you are a hot technology company looking for a little exposure, who are you going to give the scoop to, some reporter at the San Francisco Business Times or the mayor of San Francisco? It doesn’t seem like an even playing field.”
