Mirkarimi proclaims he will not resign as sheriff*

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

image[Update 4:45 p.m.] Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi walked into the hallway in front of his office door at City Hall to tell a crowd of reporters that he will, indeed, fight any attempts to remove him from office and will not go voluntarily. The Bay Citizen’s Trey Bundy describes the sheriff’s face as “shiny with sweat” and quotes him as saying:

"I do not believe that the conduct that I have taken responsibility for constitutes official misconduct within the meaning of the law, and I look forward to making my case to the ethics commission and the board of supervisors.”

[Earlier] AP is reporting that Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi will not resign as demanded by Mayor Ed Lee. The source: Mirkarimi’s attorney, Lidia Stiglich (center, above). Lee told Mirkarimi yesterday after his sentencing for false imprisonment involving his wife that he wanted Mirkarimi to quit within 24 hours or face an ethics probe over his domestic violence case. Mirkarimi was expected to have a statement later today, or maybe not. Here’s the quote from Stiglich:

"I'm not aware of any plans for the sheriff to resign. I'm disappointed it's proceeding in this fashion. I think it should be left to the voters."
