  • Alex Smith says he’s “not offended at all” that the 49ers threw him under the bus while pursuing Peyton Manning. Mercury News
  • Safeway will stop selling so-called “pink slime” filler in its hamburger meat. Contra Costa Times
  • Several online date sites, including Christian Mingle, agreed to screen for sexual predators, state Attorney General Kamala Harris announced. AP
  • Veteran San Francisco defense lawyer Steve Kalar was appointed as the new federal public defender for the Bay Area. Mercury News
  • An Oakland man who happens to be a cousin of the late Oscar Grant, the BART police shooting victim, filed a $10 million federal civil rights lawsuit against Oakland stemming from his being shot in the back by a cop while fleeing a van in February. Chronicle
  • John Swett High School  in Crockett was locked down Wednesday afternoon after two students received threats via social media. Contra Costa Times
