Report: Yahoo considering layoffs ‘in the thousands’

imageYahoo’s new CEO Scott Thompson’s anticipated restructuring of the beleaguered tech giant may get bloody soon. Kara Swisher at All things D cites multiple sources as saying he’s preparing for layoffs “that are likely to number in the thousands.” Besides Yahoo’s large products organization, other areas reportedly considered for targeting: public relations and marketing, research and marginal businesses. An excerpt:

His first — and very controversial — act has been to threaten patent litigation against Facebook. The move was widely decried in Silicon Valley and also has been unpopular with some of Yahoo’s own engineers, who think intellectual property should be used defensively and not offensively.
