Robert Birgeneau to step down as UC Berkeley chancellor

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

imageHe’ll leave at the end of the year and return to teaching and research on the Berkeley campus, the university announced in a written statement today. The news was only mildly surprising, since the Canadian physicist had said he planned to stay in the job for seven years when he came to Berkeley in 2004. He will have ended up staying an extra year.

Add: He’s been a frequent critic of California’s budget cuts to higher education. And, as Matt Krupnick notes for the Mercury News and its sibling newspapers, he’s also been no stranger to criticism from student protesters.
