The socialite and preservationist who was instrumental in helping to save the Palace of Fine Arts a half-century ago when it was crumbling and slated for demolition, died Friday after a long illness. A long-time former president of the San Francisco Planning Commission, Mein fought for years to preserve the city’s waterfront from high-rise development. In 1978, he founded the Nob Hill Gazette, the monthly magazine devoted to chronicling the activities of affluent San Franciscans. Obit: Chronicle
