Academy of Sciences expedition yields long-lost frog

Tuesday, April 3, 2012

imageThat little fella is a Bururi long-fingered frog, a species that hadn’t been seen since 1949 and was feared extinct . . . until an expedition by California Academy of Sciences biologist David Blackburn and others to the East African forests of Burundi in December. Susanne Rust at California Watch posts about the find, and how the frog is now part of the academy’s herpetology collection, including this fun quote from Blackburn:
“I thought I heard the call and walked toward it, then waited. In a tremendous stroke of luck, I casually moved aside some grass, and the frog was just sitting there on a log."
