Daily Cal to become broadsheet, undergo design change

Wednesday, April 4, 2012

The Daily Californian is about to upgrade from a tabloid to a broadsheet and add color to its front imagepage every day—to save money. Editor Tomer Ovadia says the non-profit newspaper heavily read by UC Berkeley students will be able to save about $10,000 annually under its new printing arrangement. The change begins April 16, and entails a complete layout overhaul.

Add: Now for the ominous part: The newspaper continues to run a $200,000 deficit and unless UCB students approve an initiative to generate funds for the paper from student fees, it may have to “cut additional days of print” to balance its budget.
