What goes around often comes around in the art world, and in Walnut Creek that means the return soon of a 5-ton sculpted hand by Italian-American modernist Benny Bufano. It was removed for restoration in 2009 after languishing little-noticed in an office park for more than 40 years. This time the “Hand of Peace” is getting a better spot, at the civic center park.
Add: Originally done for the San Francisco Arts Commission, it ended up in Walnut Creek after the artist/peace activist completed it in 1967, three years before he died. As a young man Bufano made a name for himself by cutting off his trigger finger and sending it to President Woodrow Wilson to protest World War I.
